ELVAC RTU Systems in Primary Substations
ELVAC RTU offers:
- main communication between SCADA system and substation, usually via fiber optic lines or LTE modem, ELVAC RTU works also as router and firewall with secure communication abilities,
- communication protocols support – IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-103, IEC 60870-5-104, DNP 3.0, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, DLMS and many others,
- possible centralized (all signals to one place) or distributed (each feeder with separate rtu) system topology,
- collection of digital signals,
- control of switching elements, tap changer control of transformers for voltage correction in power lines
- substation automatic functions (programmable), like switching to the backup line (bus) in case of power outage,
- data collection from various devices, like protection relays, energy meters, power quality meters etc.
- 3-phase feeder monitoring, on medium voltage (MV), the ELVAC RTU can be used for direct measurement of voltages, currents and derived quantities (power outputs, power factors etc.), power lines disturbance detection (ANSI 25, 27, 46, 47, 50, 50N, 51, 51N, 59, 59N, 67, 67N, 81H, 81L, 81R), disturbance recording (COMTRADE) and protection relay,
- optional local HMI.
ELVAC RTU Systems in Ring Main Units / Secondary Substations
The increasing demands of energy operators on the functions of RTU systems (Smart Grid, Self Healing Grid and Power Quality Metering), the variability of inputs and outputs and the processing of a larger amount of data have led to the fact that modular RTU systems are mainly used in these applications. ELVAC RTUs offer:
- communication with SCADA using various communication protocols, including secure communication and communication tunnels,
- optional simultaneous multi-channel communication, for example backup communication with SCADA system or for service purposes,
- data collection from switching element and alarms (doors, etc.),
- remote control, system setup and firmware update,
- measurements on the primary (MV) and secondary side (LV) of transformer,
- fault indication, protection relay functions (current, voltage, frequency).
- automation functions for Smart Grid and Self Healing Grid,
- optional power quality measurement,
- disturbance recording (COMTRADE) and remote download,
- integrated backup battery charging and testing,
- integrated HMI in RTU.
ELVAC RTU in Renewable Energy Sources
The system modularity of the ELVAC RTU offers the wide selection of configurations according to the needs of the application, either on the side of the renewable energy operator or on the side of the distribution network operator. ELVAC RTUs offer:
- complete solution in one device for communication with SCADA, data acquisition, measurement and power control,
- integrated functions for smooth system regulation and control,
- cooperation with other systems, such as protection relays, inverters, power quality meters, energy meters, etc.
ELVAC RTU on Overhead Power Lines
Overhead medium-voltage lines usually form a very large part of the distribution network, and therefore it is very important to increase the intelligence of this part in order to minimize the search time in the event of any line fault. Typically, these networks are divided into smaller segments that are remotely monitored and controlled using reclosers, sectionalizers/load break switches (LBS) or indicators. ELVAC RTUs offer:
- all-in-one solution (power backup, communication, signalling, control, measurement, HMI) for remote monitoring and control of reclosers, sectionalizers/LBS or fault passage indicators.
- independence on switching elements manufacturer and its measuring parts – we have solutions for all types of sensors (measuring transformers, low-power capacitive and resistive sensors, Rogowski coils),
- fault indication (overcurrent, short-circuit, earth-fault, (including directional and time depending), current asymmetry, over-voltage, under-voltage, frequency), the fault indication is used for activation of automation functions (protection relay functions) in reclosers and LBS applications,
- automation functions for reclosing, switching-off in non-voltage pauses and another programmable principles for use in SMART GRID and SELF HEALING GRID.
ELVAC RTU in Enterprise Energetics
Our company has extensive experience and references from enterprise energetics thanks to many large industrial enterprises in our region. These applications are essentially very similar to a classic distribution network, just on a smaller scale.
ELVAC solutions offer:
- design, production of switchboards, control systems and other accessories and their implementation,
- integration of existing automation elements (such as protection relays, energy meters, etc.) into a new system,
- complete implementation of dispatching centers – SCADA/ADMS SW, servers, multi-displays,

ELVAC RTU in Municipal Infrastructure Monitoring and Control
With the growing emphasis on reducing CO₂ emissions, energy management systems in buildings are increasingly used and the possibilities for electromobility are also expanding. These systems are very often linked to the use of renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic systems on the roofs of buildings.
